Apr 29, 2014 - If you want to factory reset laptop to default settings, you have to make sure hard disk is not destroyed or deleted. If it is, onekey recovery. Some say to contact Microsoft and they will send me a version, or just download the recovery one from the Microsoft site. But I also hear that the retail version of Windows 8 will not activate with an OEM product key. Or contact Asus, but they seem to charge for recovery media, and there online service shop does not work in the US.

Here is my situation. I purchased a new ASUS X551MA RCLN03 Laptop. It originally came with pre-installed Windows 8. Soon after I got it, Windows Update updated it to Windows 8.1- All Good! Well, anyway all was good until a days ago when I turned it on and all I could see were “Wing Dings” and my logon picture. The computer does nothing beyond this point. Nothing happens if I try to input my password. Now here is where it gets bad! I took this 6 month old Laptop to an Authorized repair center, that so happened to be the same place I bought it. Back-up a few days I had already tried “ALL” of the F9 sys recovery options; “none” of them worked. Bottom line is that everything I tried to do resulted in a message in one form or another that the recovery partition was gone! Ok, back to now – The repair center was not able to fix it. Weather they used a boot disk or a boot USB drive the computer would not allow them in. So I have sent the computer to ASUS for repair or replace. My question is this: If ASUS is not able to fix or replace (hypothetically) what would be my options with this machine? Could I format or stuff another HDD in it and buy Windows 8.1 and be done? Could I do the former but downgrade to Windows 7 OEM Sys Builders Edition? Finally, should I just load it on a clay thrower and see how many shots I can get in it before it hits the ground? Seriously, I’m curious what options there are.
